In 1903, the first Harley bike was manufactured by William Harley and Arthur Davidson in a tiny 10 foot by 15 foot wooden shed located at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A year after, the first Harley-Davidson Dealership was introduced, with Henry Meyer as its very first buyer.
Although Harley Davidson’s racing department was created in 1913, as early as 1905, a Harley motorcycle already won a race. By 1910, a good number of Harleys joined competitions, ranging from lap races, endurance competitions, and hill climbing races. In every race, the Harley ended as the very first place, so that inspired Harley-Davidson to open up its official racing department.
But aside from racing, Harley-Davidson motorcycles became also known in the military. In 1917, about one-third of manufactured Harley Davidson bikes were sold to the elite US military. This number then increased up to 50% in 1918.
Outside racing and the military, in 1983, a group called Harley Owners Group was formed. In 17 years time, the original number increased up to 500,000 active members, making this group the largest factory sponsored motorcycle club worldwide.
