Many of the modifications that took place from 1966 to the 1967 model year was fairly minor things like flat finish rockers sans ribbing, factory 6 inch rally wheels with really small chromed out beauty hubcaps, a new single backup light located over the license plate, and the handbrake was also moved from beneath the dashboard to in between the seats. The RPO L71 had distinctive aluminum heads.

Its front suspension had independent upper or lower A arms, anti-roll bar, tubular hydraulic shock absorbers, and cool springs. The rear suspension featured fixed differential, radius rods, tubular hydraulic shock absorbers, lateral struts, in an extra antiroll bar came with 1967s that had a big block engine.

The original color possibilities of the 1967 Corvette included Ermine White, Marina blue, Sun fire yellow, Rally red, Goodwood green, Silver Pearl, Lynndale blue, Marboro maroon, Elkhart blue, and Tuxedo Black.

The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray was born out of several very distinct inspirations of designer Larry Shinoda. Shinoda took ideas from several sources and when they were all wrapped together the legendary Corvette was built. Bill Mitchell was Shinoda’s boss at the time and he influenced the designer in more than one way to help shape what would become the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray:

1. Mitchell’s Previous Designs: Mitchell had previously overseen the design of an unproduced ‘Q-Corvette’ which Shinoda took careful notes of. 2. Mitchell’s Vehicle: Shinoda found more inspiration from his boss by way of what Mitchell drove, which at the time was a Jaguar E-Type. 3. Mitchell’s Adventure: On a deep sea fishing expedition Mitchell had caught and landed a Mako Shark. Shinoda took several key points from this majestic creature of the sea and incorporated them into the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. 4. Mitchell’s Racing Involvement: In 1959 Mitchell sponsored a racing car called the ‘Mitchell Sting Ray’ because at that time Chevrolet had pulled out of factory racing. Though it had no top and did not give away what the eventual 1963 Corvette Sting Ray would look like, it is widely speculated that this was the biggest influence on Shinoda’s design.

The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray brought with it some new developments that were unique to the year. While some of the developments stayed, others did not. The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray was produced for the first and last time with a split rear window and non-functional hood vents. Both of these features were dropped the very next year for what was called ’safety issues.’ Because the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray was the only year that featured the split window, it has been dubbed the ‘Split Window Coupe’ and is a highly sought after Corvette among collectors.

The introduction of the independent rear suspension was one innovation that did stand the test of time. This technology was not new but it was to the Corvette. This proved to be a technology that would last. The implementation of the Wonderbar auto tuning radio and air conditioning in mid 1963, were features that proved to be a foundation in the Corvette family.

A small block 327 V-8 powered the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. The maximum output for horsepower was 360 in 1963 which increased in 1964. While not much by today’s Corvette standards, the output was quite significant for the time.

The C2 generation of the Corvette and later models will begin to take shape but it all started with the Larry Shinoda’s design on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. Bill Mitchell’s true inspiration helped shape the Corvette that is enjoyed today and will live in the hearts of Corvette lovers forever. The Corvette will always remain an iconic symbol for the now famous brand.

The old fashioned wheel covers from the previous model were replaced with slotted six inch Rally wheels with chrome beauty rings and lug nuts concealed behind small chrome caps. The interior alterations were the revised upholstery and the handbrake moved from beneath the dash to between the seats. One option is the optional hardtop is offered with a black vinyl cover.

The Power trains were not changed much. The two small-block V-8s returned, as did the 390-bhp big-block (hulking beneath a redesigned hood scoop). But the top two 427s now developed 400 and 435 bhp with a switch to triple two-barrel carburetors. As before, they differed in compression ratios — 10.25:1 and 11.0:1, respectively — and the solid lifters and transistorized ignition that went on the 425-bhp unit. The latter, RPO L71, was also available with special aluminum heads (instead of cast iron) and larger-diameter exhaust valves as RPO L89, though with the same grossly understated horsepower.

The 1967 ultimate Corvette engine was coded L88. This was an even wider L89 which was close to a pure racing engine that Chevy made. The Corvette was equipped with lightweight heads, bigger ports, hotter cam, aluminum radiator, small diameter flywheel, stratospheric 12.5:1 compression and a single huge Holly four barrel carburetor. The result was no less than 560 bhp, again at 6400 rpm.

There was one problem, you had to use 103 octane racing fuel. This was available only at certain service stations. This certainly was not an engine for the average person. Chevy made several individual options mandatory when the L88 was ordered. These are the positraction, the transistorized ignition, heavy duty suspension, power brakes and RPO C48. These deleted the normal radio and heater to cut down on weight and discourage the car being used on the street.

When American muscle cars were built based on the blue collar American worker, and the product bearing the sticker stating made in the U. S. A., any person would take pride in the completed product.

Chevrolet had many muscle cars also, and the sound was unique in toughness. The cars were camaros, corvettes, chevelles and the list goes on and on. Chevrolet may have been more popular because the cost of making these cars more powerful was less than the enhancement of an original ford muscle car.

There is no better feeling of freedom in the world. When political leaders are attempting to limit these feelings from Americans, this is happening because these people have not had the opportunity to ever be free.
